Nathan Cole

Nathan Cole is First Associate Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition to his previous positions in the Chicago Symphony and as Principal Second Violin of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, he has appeared as guest concertmaster with the orchestras of Cincinnati, Houston, Minnesota, Oregon, Ottawa, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Nathan has been featured as concertmaster in Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade with the LA Philharmonic, as well as in concerto appearances at the Hollywood Bowl. During his time in Chicago, he was featured in recital and live radio broadcasts on the Dame Myra Hess series and Live from Studio One at WFMT. He also performed Pierre Boulez’s Anthèmes II, for violin and electronics, to close Boulez’s 85th birthday concert in Orchestra Hall. At the 2004 Sion-Valais competition chaired by Shlomo Mintz, Nathan won Second Prize and Special Prize for the commissioned work.

Nathan made his debut with the Louisville Orchestra at the age of ten. While studying at the Curtis Institute of Music with Pamela Frank, Felix Galimir, Ida Kavafian and Jaime Laredo, he formed the Grancino String Quartet. At the invitation of Isaac Stern, the Quartet made its debut in New York's Weill Hall. Several summers at Marlboro, as well as tours with Musicians from Marlboro, enriched his love of chamber music.

Along with his wife Akiko Tarumoto, the LA Phil’s Assistant Concertmaster, Nathan co-hosts the podcast Stand Partners for Life, which reveals the “secrets of the symphony” to a worldwide audience every week.
